Just 106 will be built, each wearing a healthy $3.2 million price tag.

Certainly there was a tacit admission from those in charge that its quoted V-Max is first and foremost about exceeding the 243mph set by the McLaren F1 rather than chasing an absolute, at-all-costs limit.

McLaren has officially unveiled one of the most highly-anticipated cars of 2018 - the new Speedtail. The Speedtail needs to work as well in a Sainsbury's vehicle park as it does at the end of a runway, was the manufacturer's overriding theme.

Although that prodigious powertrain is part of the equation, clever aerodynamics are at the core of this car's performance.

Retractable digital rear-view cameras replace traditional door mirrors to further improve aerodynamic efficiency, while carbon fiber front-wheel static aero covers reduce air turbulence around the wheel arches. The windscreen sweeps back overhead, too - both feature electrochroamatic technology, which means they forgo the use of sun visors or shades. So McLaren says any Speedtail coming here has to be imported individually under the Show or Display rule, limiting driving on public roads to 2,500 miles a year or less. About a third of them are expected to go to buyers in the United States despite the fact that, technically, the Speedtail isn't legal to drive on public streets here.

Like other McLaren models, the Speedtail is made largely out of carbon fiber, an expensive but strong and light material. That's another homage to the F1, which had a similar set-up - allowing the driver to sit centrally for the best and most natural view out.

A carbon-fiber body, aluminum suspension, carbon ceramic brakes - even lightweight leather - all help minimize the vehicle's heft. It's all been created to encompass the driver and the two outer passengers, and there's a range of exquisite Scandinavian leathers making up the upholstery.

McLaren is particularly keen to highlight the active ailerons attached to the trailing edge of the car's rear-end. Those side-view cameras retract, and the aluminum active suspension lowers the auto by 1.4 inches.

USA buyers have a few extra hoops: Our safety regs don't allow the seating layout, nor the retractable high-def digital cameras that replace door mirrors. A special leather finish makes it easy to slide into the seat. The 2019 Speedtail teases so far haven't offered up a real look at the auto, but some images have now leaked that claim to show what McLaren is cooking up.

Technically speaking, the new hypercar doesn't meet USA regulations to be road legal. The number is significant: that's how many F1s were sold.
