UN Ambassador Nikki Haley Resigns

Report Nikki Haley resigns from the Trump administration Nikki Haley resigns as US ambassador to the United Nations

With Haley sitting at his side, Trump told a crowd of reporters that she will be leaving at the end of the year, explaining that her job as ambassador allowed her to get to know numerous other worldwide players and world leaders.

Mr Trump said Mrs Haley - who was confirmed in the post shortly after his inauguration - had told him six months ago she wanted to take some time off. "I pick up the phone and call him or meet with him in person", she said when there was speculation she may have been the author of the NYT op-ed that scalded Trump.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley shows US President Donald Trump a note as he chairs a United Nations Security Council meeting.

Haley, a former governor of SC, had been an early and frequent critic of Trump, so when he named her the envoy to the world body weeks after his election in November 2016, the appointment was seen as an olive branch.

On Tuesday, Haley listed what she said were the accomplishments of her two terms, including North Korea sanctions, support for Israel, cutting the United Nations budget by $1.3 billion, and focusing on Iran's support of terror groups in the Middle East, as the USA defended its withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Haley said she doesn't "have anything set on where I'm going to go", but "for all of you that are going to ask about 2020, no, I'm not running for 2020".

Nikki Haley scrubbed both her Twitter and Instagram of any mentions of Trump.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime", Haley said.

Haley, who is not personally wealthy, hinted in her resignation letter to Trump that she is headed to the private sector.

Haley has been viewed as a steadying presence within the turbulent administration, one of several establishment Republican appointments that helped deliver Trump's message around the globe.

Haley was the first woman named to President Trump's Cabinet. ".I can speak for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo".

"Before she was named by Trump to her United Nations post, Haley was elected the first female governor of SC".

"I have given everything I've got these last eight years".

Haley's departure marked one of the rare examples of a senior Trump administration official making a graceful exit.

"Hopefully, you're coming back at some point, maybe in a different capacity", he said, during a press conference in the White House, alongside Haley.

As a strong supporter of term limits, I have long believed that rotation in office benefits the public.
