Torchlight protest at racing ad on Sydney Opera House

The Chaser project new ad onto Opera House as Jones apologises for Louise Herron interview The Chaser Projected Alan Jones Phone Number Onto Sydney Opera House

A video was taken of the draw by Racing NSW stewards for audit purposes on Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday night, hundreds of torchlights shone on the Opera House as protesters attempted to disrupt the controversial promotion of a multi-million dollar horse race on the icon's sails.

An estimated 2,000 people bearing torches surrounded the base of the Opera House on the foreshore of the harbour and attempted to interrupt the display.

Jones had called for Ms Herron to be sacked during a testy confrontation on Friday after she ruled out allowing words or branding highlighting The Everest race to be projected onto the Opera House because "it's not a billboard".

The outrage had already prompted racing authorities to drop plans to hold the barrier draw publicly, so as to avoid "security risks", and betting was suspended from noon until the announcement of the draw result in the evening.

Jones and Premier Gladys Berejiklian have faced an increasingly vocal backlash after she intervened within hours of the interview to allow the horse race to be promoted on the Opera House.

"I used some words in these programs about the Everest, and the Opera House, and Louise, which in hindsight I now most regret hearing, having heard the impact they've clearly had on some people", he told his 2GB listeners this morning.

It should be noted that Herron was upholding the statute of the Opera House in doing so.

A protest is being planned for when the projection takes place, at 8pm on Tuesday night. "We have to fight to stop more of this appalling advertising".

Some 240,000 people have now signed a Change.org petition calling for the promotion to be stopped.

"The Opera House case is a flashpoint, because it throws into broad daylight what normally happens in the dark", he added - namely, the fact that a huge amount of political influence in this country can be bought by powerful corporations, who many politicians end up working for after their political careers are done.

In a letter to the premier on Tuesday, the NSW Heritage Council said it was extremely disappointed with the government's decision and described the projection as "inappropriate". The guidelines have always been stretched in the part and the commercialisation of the Opera House has always been there.
