President Donald Trump prepared a triumphant swearing-in ceremony for his new conservative Supreme Court justice Monday and called sexual assault allegations against Brett Kavanaugh a "hoax".

More recently, Democrats have cast doubt on Kavanaugh's account of his drinking while a teenager, an issue that came up repeatedly during a Senate hearing that included testimony from Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, who accused him of drunkenly assaulting her while they were in high school. She testified under oath but Kavanaugh denied these claims, putting the pressure on US senators to decide if he was qualified for the job.

Addressing Kavanaugh specifically, the president said, "You sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent".

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower chamber of Congress - predicted that Democrats would pay for their attempts to block the confirmation, especially during the lurid debate over decades-old sexual assault allegations. "I think it's the end of whatever legacy she has worked so hard to achieve as a moderate", Amy Halsted, co-director of Maine People's Alliance, which helped start the fundraiser, told Rolling Stone. "And now they want to impeach him". "Not only the tactics of the Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee, but then those who literally have our members under assault".

"You've seen some shifts, but I still think that we're in a strong place", said New Mexico Rep.

McConnell said being majority leader means "your approval rating takes a beating from time to time and that's a good recruitment tool for the other side".

The U.S. Senate voted to confirm Kavanaugh Saturday after weeks of hearings looking into his background. Kavanaugh went through a bruising confirmation process in the US Senate, where questions were raised over his partisan rhetoric and allegations of sexual misconduct as a young man.

Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation completed a report on sexual misconduct allegations against Mr Kavanaugh - but the findings have not been released to the public. After reports broke out of her husband's alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford), Melania Trump did not travel with the president to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

"The Supreme Court is a team of nine and I will always be a team player on the team of nine", Kavanaugh said.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologize to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the awful pain and suffering you have been forced to endure".

"I think it's an insult to the American public".

As he returned to the White House Monday from Florida, Trump anticipated that Kavanaugh's swearing-in would be a "big night". Kavanaugh, Collins insisted, "fits within the mainstream of legal thought" and is "more of a centrist than his critics maintain"; further, he has a "record of judicial independence" and will protect abortion rights as well as access to health insurance if one has a preexisting condition-which, of course, would be just about anyone over the age of 40.
