Microsoft will be using their Azure network for Project xCloud and say it does work on current 4G networks and is running at 10 megabits per second, but will scale as 5G becomes more widely available.
"We've enabled compatibility with existing and future Xbox games by building out custom hardware for our datacenters that leverages our years of console and platform experience", Kareem Choudhry, the corporate vice president of Microsoft's Gaming Cloud group, wrote in a blog post.
Something to look forward to: Microsoft has revealed the details of its game streaming service.
Starting next year, gamers across consoles, PCs, and mobile devices will be able to access a new service from Microsoft called Project xCloud that will provide access to a library of more than 3,000 games developed for Xbox. It's pretty exciting that Microsoft's game streaming initiative now has a name and a general window for when it will be available for the public to try, so we'll definitely be watching this as we close in on 2019.
But cloud gaming has not enjoyed as much success as other applications have in moving to the cloud. Microsoft claims it has a grip on this latency issue and is confident that it can create a game streaming service which will allow users to play anything they want on any device they choose.
The first public trials are expected to start in 2019, with that beta testing going towards perfecting the technology and then rolling it out across the world.
Of course, as ever with these sort of services, the result will not just depend on Microsoft's technology, network and data centers, but also the user's connection. Obviously, Project xCloud will roll out first across areas heavily supported by Microsoft Azure, but things should grow each year from there.
While this is being tested with mobile devices now, you can bet we'll also see this move over to PCs as well. Our goal is to deliver high-quality experiences at the lowest possible bitrate that work across the widest possible networks, taking into consideration the uniqueness of every device and network.
