To Democrats, Kavanaugh's assent to the Supreme Court in spite of decades-old sexual misconduct allegations will only deepen the party's pull with female voters, including independents and moderates who may have previously voted for Republicans.

As Chief Justice John Roberts swore in Mr Kavanaugh during a private Supreme Court ceremony, protesters demonstrated loudly outside, at one point rushing the steps of the court and banging on its ornate bronze doors while some sat on a Lady Justice statue.

Collins revealed Sunday on CNN that Kavanaugh's angry rebuttal to allegations by Christine Blasey Ford that he had attempted to rape her when they were teenagers helped to sway her vote.

This is the second Supreme Court appointment by President Donald Trump, who said Judge Kavanaugh would be sworn in the same day.

Kavanaugh replaces retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative jurist who often cast the deciding swing vote on ideologically divisive issues, upholding abortion and gay rights and the use of affirmative action aiding racial minorities in college admissions.

Kavanaugh's confirmation process has laid bare the partisan gridlock on Capitol Hill and the political polarization of America just a month before midterm elections.

"This has been terrifying, her family has been through a lot", Ford's lawyer, Debra Katz, told MSNBC's Kasie Hunt.

Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY looked ahead to November, appealing to voters beyond the Senate chamber: "Change must come from where change in America always begins: the ballot box".

Before her speech, protesters could be overheard chanting, "Vote no!"

While Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Kavanaugh's confirmation was a shining moment for the GOP heading into next month's pivotal elections, GOP Gov. John Kasich of OH predicted "a good year" for Democrats and said he wonders about "the soul of our country" in the long term after the tumultuous hearings.

Lambda Legal, HRC, AIDS United, The Trevor Project, and GLAAD were among 73 national, state, and local organizations that signed a letter opposing Kavanaugh's nomination. I think she feels like she did the right thing.

Hirono's assertion that there was corroborating evidence that supported Ford's story is false, as prosecutor Rachel Mitchell specifically noted in her 5-page memo on Ford's testimony. "We established that the presumption of innocence is still important".

Butterfield - who served for a year on the North Carolina Supreme Court after then-Gov.

Senator Manchin faces extraordinary political pressure. "What she did was to come forward and testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee and agree to cooperate with any investigation by the FBI, and that's what she sought to do here".

On Friday, the Senate voted 51-49 to move Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination to a final vote, which took place Saturday afternoon. "The energy level is high".

Pointing to television footage of protesters outside the Capitol, he said their numbers paled in comparison to the thousands of supporters awaiting him in Kansas.

Trump has slammed the demonstrators and accused them of being "paid" by Democratic mega-donor George Soros to "make senators look bad". Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), all voted to confirm Kavanaugh.
