Prime Minister Theresa May will urge her fractured Conservative Party to unite behind "decent, moderate and patriotic" policies, a day after her rival Boris Johnson challenged her authority with a crowd-pleasing speech of his own.

In remarks that fuelled speculation about his leadership ambitions, the man who spearheaded the Leave campaign contrasted his position on Brexit with that of Mrs May, who backed Remain, saying: "Unlike the Prime Minister, I fought for this".

On the sidelines, the likes of the former foreign secretary Boris Johnson have been actively working against her.

The white paper would see Britain continue to have some close ties to the EU, including a "common rulebook" for all goods (but not services) traded with the EU, and a combined customs territory to enable the easy trade of goods between the EU and the UK.

Mr Duncan Smith, who was ousted as leader in 2003 after little more than two years, said the Tory party "knows when it has to make a change, it gets to that point and it discovers that actually the party's collective intelligence is telling the leadership "you are in the wrong place".

"But we have been very clear, we have got to deliver a deal for the United Kingdom that's good for our economy, make sure people continue to have the opportunity to have job security and job opportunities for the future and respect that referendum and deliver on getting back control of our border, of our laws, of our money and that's what this package does".

Chequers also states that there would be no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, which will still be in the EU. The Financial Times's Seb Payne described it as the "beginnings of a leadership bid".

Hammond has launched an sustained personal attack on the former foreign secretary as he prepared to deliver a speech at the Conservative party conference in Birmingham.

She hit back, accusing the bloc leaders of creating an impasse and demanding her Government be treated with respect.

"He is absolutely right about the threat that Chequers poses to our democracy, our country and ultimately the fortunes of the Conservative Party if we stick with it", Andrew Bridgen, a Conservative lawmaker, said. But with Brexit day looming on March 29, chances are rising that the United Kingdom could find itself crashing out of the bloc without a deal.

But if that's not decided ahead of time and negotiations break down at the last minute, the United Kingdom could crash out of the union, which businesses have warned against.

"There are so many private conversations that should now be public conversations - and notably by British businesses", Soubry said.

"At the same time, as in any negotiation, we will listen to alternative ways of delivering on the strategic criteria we have set out".

Outside the conference center, hundreds of people holding signs saying "Bollocks to Brexit" and "It's not too late" held a march calling for a second referendum.

Her own future remains full of uncertainty.

Earlier this week other carmakers in Britain including BMW, McLaren and Honda said they had triggered some contingency plans, such as certifying models in the European Union, redrawing production schedules and stockpiling parts.
