Earlier, NAIJ.com had reported how Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo emphatically denied claims he had unlawful intercourse with an American woman nine years ago, branding it "fake news".

In an Instagram video, Ronaldo said: "They want to promote [themselves] by [using] my name".

"Ms. Mayorga's August, 2018 decision to contact the police and participate in the criminal investigation of the June 13, 2009 sexual assault, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's current investigation of the June 13, 2009 sexual assault of Ms. Mayorga, and the existence of Nevada Revised Statute 171.083 removing the time limits for criminal prosecution of a sexual assault in the State of Nevada, are not 'fake news'".

"At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description. A medical exam was conducted", it said.

When Der Spiegel first reported the out-of-court settlement in April 2017, in an article which did not name the alleged victim, Ronaldo's representatives called the story "a piece of journalistic fiction". Ronaldo invited her, her friend and others to his penthouse suite.

Her allegations cite that she was in the bathroom changing her clothes and Ronaldo came to her and exposed himself while asking her to perform a sex act on him.

According to German news source Der Spiegel, Ronaldo apologised during the lawsuit saying that "he was sorry, he was usually a gentleman". Their denials form the defamation claims in Mayorga's lawsuit.

It said the assault had left her with "severe emotional and bodily injuries including but not limited to anal contusions, posttraumatic stress disorder and major depression".

According to Heavy, court documents described Kathryn as being "raised in a middle-class family".

Mayorga alleges that she was paid $375,000 in exchange for her silence in 2009.

Then, a sports website leaked copies of documents and communications between Ronaldo and his team relevant to the mediation to Der Spiegel, which published a detailed account of the allegations in April 2017.

Ronaldo is a 4-time Balon D'Or victor and is regarded as one of the best ever footballers in history. A Portuguese citizen, Ronaldo was transferred from Manchester United to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009 for a then-record sum of 94 million euros, or about $130 million.

Ronaldo is one of the biggest names in world sport.
