Ted Cruz and Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke clashed over police shootings and gun rights in the first debate of their competitive Texas Senate race. There were almost 45,000 "O'Rourke" tweets as well, and all three terms became top trends in the U.S. The tweets may lean toward O'Rourke, but as the congressman said onstage at Southern Methodist University, 50 percent of rural Texans don't have reliable access to broadband internet. He then suggested he wants the woman who accused him of sexual assault to testify "respectfully" before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Following the debate, O'Rourke told reporters that Cruz "has a tendency to mischaracterize a position" and was making him appear more politically more radical than he is.
Mr. O'Rourke, in turn, did not deny he favors higher taxes but stressed instead a format he said favors the wealthy and stands as a misguided move for a nation deeply in debt.
Texas hasn't had a Democratic senator since Lloyd Bentsen in 1994, but O'Rourke has amassed a large campaign war chest and made a point of visiting all 254 Texas counties, including many that Democrats wrote off years ago.
Cruz finished second in the 2016 Republican presidential primary. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll gave O'Rourke a slight edge, with 47 percent to Cruz's 45 percent, but that came on the heels of a Quinnipiac University survey that showed Cruz up by nine percentage points.

Cruz said he could sum up his position in four words: "Legal: Good".
That ignored Cruz drawing the ire of many Texas conservatives for refusing to endorse Trump during the 2016 Republican National Convention.
The debate, slated to begin at 7 p.m. EST, marks the first direct face-off between the two men in a race that has vaulted to the top of the American political consciousness, as Democrats believe O'Rourke represents their best chance in decades to win statewide office in Texas for the first time since the early 1990's.
Things are likely to stay nasty in coming weeks.
O'Rourke deadpanned: "True to form".
Nonetheless, O'Rourke has raised significantly out-raised Cruz.
