Averting a murder trial that had been almost four years in coming, former rap mogul Marion (Suge) Knight pleaded no contest Thursday to voluntary manslaughter for running over and killing a Compton businessman and agreed to serve almost 30 years in prison.
The Death Row Records founder made the plea to avoid charges of murdering one man and attempting to murder a second with his pick-up truck in Los Angeles.
Knight killed Terry Carter, 55, a Compton, Calif., businessman, and injured a security consultant, Cle Sloan, when he ran over both at a local burger stand.
Suge Knight is now 53 years old which means that he will be in his 80s before he is released from prison.
Two other criminal cases against Knight will be dismissed at sentencing.
TMZ reports that the former Death Row exec pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter.
Knight, who at the time was out on bail in a robbery case, fled the scene but was later arrested. He took the plea deal days before his trial was scheduled to begin.
"You served nine years for it", Coen said, before Knight agreed to move on.
Knight has reportedly been experiencing health issues in recent years and told the judge he expects to die in prison. The 28 years sentence is extraordinarily stiff for a guilty plea for manslaughter. In 1997, he was sentenced to jail for violating that probation after participating in an altercation in Las Vegas that culminated hours later in the fatal shooting of Tupac Shakur while he rode in Knight's auto.
He had faced life in prison if convicted of murder for killing Carter.
