Ex-umpire: US Open umpire Carlos Ramos 'thrown under bus'

Herald Sun Defends Racist Serena Williams Cartoon Amid Global Condemnation Martina Navratilova wades into Serena Williams controversy

It started when chair umpire Carlos Ramos warned Williams for receiving coaching, and eventually ended up with accusations of sexism in the aftermath.

Many officials were also left angry with the fact that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) took almost 48 hours to defend Ramos, on Monday (Sept 10) afternoon, by which time the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) had supported Williams' claims of sexism after she was given a game penalty for her behaviour during her defeat by Naomi Osaka.

Osaka watches on as Serena Williams confronts chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the US Open final.

Williams later broke her racket and shouted at Ramos, which led to a penalty point and a game penalty.

Williams accused Ramos of sexism, claiming that men get away with much worse behavior than she was penalized for.

Williams, who was under the impression the first violation had been rescinded, returned to Ramos to seek an apology for saying she had received coaching earlier. Williams was docked a game Saturday and went on to lose the championship to Japan's Naomi Osaka.

"I'm fine, given the circumstances", he told the publication.

She also did not criticise Williams' on-court behavior.

Much of the criticism of Williams has centered on how her actions had spoiled a precious moment for Osaka, who was even moved to apologize for beating the home favorite to a NY crowd angrily booing Ramos.

"I think everything would have been different".

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned" by officials with the Women's Tennis Association who questioned Ramos' rulings in such a high-profile contest, Ings said.

The CEO of USTA, the governing body of tennis in the US, was asked if she believes female players are held to different standards than men.

Williams was fined $17,000, which is deducted from her prize money of $1.85 million as the tournament's runner-up.

"I would say a championship match in terms of high-level talent on the court between those two ladies. obviously Naomi deserved to win and she played awesome", Curry told Omnisport.

"'I'm not attacking your character, ' is the most important thing he could have said", King told CNN.

An anonymous source told The Times of London that umpires are considering a boycott of matches involving Williams. It's a delicate situation, but "à la carte" arbitration does not exist. "Don't worry about me", Ramos said while speaking to Portuguese newspaper Tribuna Expresso, according to The Associated Press.
