"We're thrilled with how much the Apple Watch has grown in such a short time", Tim Cook told the audience during today's Gather Round keynote, which the company streamed from Steve Jobs Theater on its Cupertino campus. The new Watch 4 comes with a bunch of new features and a new design.

But it was new health capabilities that are the focus of the new watch series, including a new feature called Fall Detection.

Though the screens on Series 4 are larger, Apple said it made "minimal changes" to the case size; it's thinner and less total volume than Series 3.

Apple Watch Series 3 gets a price cut and is available starting at $279 (roughly Rs. 20,100).

Inside the device is the S4 chip with a dual-core 64-bit processor, which deliverers 2x faster performance.

Mr Williams said if the Apple Watch did not detect movement from the user for a minute after a fall, it would automatically alert their emergency contacts.

The watch will also send you notifications if you're heart rate is too low as while usually a good thing, that could be a sign of something serious, Williams.

Apple COO Jeff Williams also spoke about the three key functions of the Series 4 Watch - connectivity, fitness, and health.

The Apple Watch 4, which will be available to pre-order from this Friday, will compete with a new model from Samsung, however, which revealed plans to launch its new Galaxy Watch in Australia next month. The product will come in gold, silver and space gray models, with three aluminium finishes and three stainless steel versions.

Thankfully, there's now a gold Milanese Loop band option, allowing you to coordinate flawlessly with your new Series 4.

Series 4 packs a new optical heart sensor. With Series 4, however, you also get an electrical heart rate monitor, allowing you to take ECGs by placing your finger on the crown. In 16 of those regions, 34 carriers will have the cellular version from $499.

The new watch faces can fit up to eight complications, so you can see bite-sized information at a glance from your most-used apps.

The new watch has new features, like the ability to measure your heart rate with an electrocardiogram, and a hardware redesign that gives it a larger display. Apple is also set to ship the 2-billionth device running on iOS, the mobile operating system that powers iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch models.

Various applications have been enhanced for the new device, and the Breathe app is now available as a standalone watch face for the device, synchronising dynamic images with your breathing.

In fact, the FDA's letters to Apple classifying the watch's software as a Class II device-dated September 11 (PDF), the day before the launch event-state that the ECG app is not intended for use by people under age 22.

The Apple Watch Series 4 is now official.

What makes or breaks user experience for many smartwatches is battery life.

Apple Watch Series 4 includes a new accelerometer and gyroscope, which can detect hard falls.
