Trump says Woodward's book 'Fear' about White House is full of lies

Pressed on whether Trump can win a credibility battle with the Pulitzer victor who helped expose President Richard Nixon's Watergate-era transgressions, Sanders pointed to "actual, on record" accounts from White House staffers, again pointing to Mattis and Kelly, "not disgruntled former employees".

I am greatly concerned that everyone seems to want to "get" the person who wrote the op-ed to The New York Times regarding the Trump administration, but no one is disputing the op-ed's contents of what's going on the Trump White House ("Anonymous op-ed regarding president should horrify us all", September 6).

The Pentagon doubled down Monday on Defense Secretary Jim Mattis' denials that he ever ignored demands from President Donald Trump or mocked the commander-in-chief's grasp of military issues.

"The Woodward book is a Joke - just another assault against me, in a barrage of assaults, using now disproven unnamed and anonymous sources", Trump said in the first of a series of tweets. "If that person had come to me while I was working on this book or if it were someone I interviewed I would say, 'I need specifics.' The building blocks of journalism, of truth, are specific incidents". Dems can't stand losing.

It would not surprise me if President Trump himself wrote the op-ed just to shine the light on someone else and blame the "fake news" and blame the "deep state".

The 75-year-old Woodward said that at a National Security Council meeting a year into Trump's presidency, when he was complaining about the cost of posting thousands of US troops in foreign countries, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis had to explain the rationale to him.

Woodward added, "He's got it in his head, and when people challenge him he will say, 'Oh, I've had those ideas for thirty years - you're wrong'".

"We're doing this to prevent World War III", Woodward quoted Mattis as telling Trump. "I don't talk the way I am quoted. But someone actively is trying to undermine the duly elected president - that seems quite problematic to me and something that they should take a look at".

"A number of people came out and said that Woodward never reached out to corroborate statements attributed to them, which seems incredibly reckless for a book to make such outrageous claims, to not even take the time to get a 10-dollar fact checker to call around and verify some of these quotes happened", Sanders said.

"They are not telling the truth", said.

He argued that the person purposely put the piece in the Times to anger him, and he has continued to focus on identifying and firing the author, even as some advisers have urged him to let the matter go, said a person familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to discuss private conversations.

"The people are not anonymous to me", he says of his sources.

"These are political statements to protect their jobs - totally understandable", Woodward said.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Woodward staunchly defended the integrity of his reporting and said the book, which comes out this week, "is as carefully done as you can do an excavation of the reality of what goes on".

Trump has dismissed the Woodward book as a "scam" filled with "made up" quotes.
