Olivia Newton-John was diagnosed with cancer for a third time past year and cancelled her tour to complete a short course of radiation therapy.

The four-time Grammy victor, who will turn 70 on September 26, told Australian news programme Sunday Night that doctors found a tumour in her lower back in 2017. "I'm very lucky that I live in a state where it's legal, and that I have a husband that is a plant medicine man", she said.

She opened up for the first time about her battle with cancer back in 2013, which was her second diagnosis, having previously kept it to herself.

Newton-John called on Australia to adopt the laws of the USA state where she lives, California, and allow the medicinal use of marijuana.

Explaining why she chose not to go public with the diagnosis at the time, she told the program: "I thought "It's my life" and I just made a decision to keep it to myself".

"So, if I allow myself to go there, I could easily create that, you know, big fear".

Asked how she's coping, Olivia admitted: "I have my moments, but I'm not going to have my moment here!"

The singer has a cancer center named after her in Melbourne, Australia, the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness Research Center.

Olivia Newton-John was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992.

In a bid to fight the illness, the 69-year-old has completely cut down on sugar, and has turned to herbal remedies to help her.

I am one of millions in this journey. I see it as part of my mission.

"There are other people out there doing much, much worse than me", she adds. "They help with pain, they help with sleep".

"The first time I talked about it, and the second time I thought I didn't really need to share this, it's not something I need to share with people", she said. "I have a wonderful husband, I have all the animals I adore, I have an incredible career".
