Serena Williams fined $17,000 for violations during the US Open final

Serena Williams Fell To Naomi Osaka In A Tense US Open Final Serena's battle with umpire ignites debate on Twitter

After the match ended, in an interview with ESPN, Williams' coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, acknowledged he had tried to signal Williams, but said he didn't think she had seen him - and added that he thinks every player gets coaching during matches.

Williams defends her integrity after accusations of being coached on-court, calls the umpire "liar " Serena Williams insisted she was not cheating in the US Open final on Saturday before accusing the sport which has made her a global icon and multi-millionaire of sexism.

The tournament referee's office Sunday docked Williams $10,000 for "verbal abuse" of chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Some, such as 18-time major champion Chris Evert, thought Ramos should have warned Williams before assessing the "verbal abuse" code violation that triggered the loss of a game.

Williams, who was seeking a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title on Saturday, vigorously disputed each of the violations during the match.

Losing her 2004 quarter final to Jennifer Capriati, Serena Williams was upset by several line calls and the tournament later removed umpire Mariana Alves from officiating. But it was clear the moment took some of the shine off the win as Osaka looked more devastated than delighted when she was presented with the $3.8 million winner's cheque and trophy. I just feel like I had a lot of emotions, so I had to kind of categorize what was which emotion', Osaka said.

Current player Victoria Azarenka claimed the same violations wouldn't have been handed down if it was in a men's match. "But I'm going to continue to fight for women".

"I've never seen anything like it since I have been watching tennis. She deserved credit. She deserved to win", Williams said.

Eventually she returned to the baseline, serving out a game to love before Osaka held serve to win her first Grand Slam win.

"To lose a game for saying that is not fair", Williams said, and raised the idea that Ramos was being sexist: "There's a lot of men out here that have said a lot of things and because they are men, that doesn't happen".

The jeers were not aimed at her, with the fans instead expressing a sense of injustice at the way home favourite Williams had been treated.

In the wake of Osaka's first Grand Slam triumph, there were messages of support for Williams as well as those condemning her behavior and agreeing with the umpire's calls. Because the young player outplayed her in the first set, I think pressure got to her more than anything. This is a grand slam final'. "He's never took a game from a man because they said thief".

"Being called a cheater, she felt even more humiliated", Mouratoglou said.

In the rule book, verbal abuse is defined as "a statement about an official, opponent, sponsor, spectator, or other person that implies dishonesty or is derogatory, insulting or otherwise abusive".

Former umpire Richard Ings, who was also in charge of officials and rules on the men's tour, backed Ramos' actions.

"For all the tournaments, bar the Grand Slams, coaches can come onto the court at the change of ends to speak to their players".

"Like 100 per cent of the coaches, in 100 per cent of the matches, so we have to stop this hypocrite thing", he said. "Sometimes, things in life don't happen the way we want them, but always stay gracious and stay humble. Maybe there has to be a supervisor that comes on and has the final say before you give a game away".
