Off-duty Texas officer entered wrong apartment, shot and killed resident

Off-duty Texas police officer shoots man after mistaking apartment as her own Dallas Cop Walks Into Wrong Apartment, Kills Man Inside

It happened around 10 p.m. Thursday.

However, it was not the right apartment.

According to police, the officer, whose name hasn't been released, returned home in her uniform after her shift.

The police chief said she's spoken to Jean's family to express her condolences and reassure them investigators are working "diligently" on the case.

Guyger fatally shot 26-year-old Botham Jean on Thursday at Jean's apartment.

The man was later pronounced dead in hospital.

"I was sitting in my apartment, I heard a single gunshot followed by the commotion". The department said the investigation is ongoing and that no additional information was available. "I didn't see anything, but I could hear a female calling 911 at that point".

Frazier said Jean was a bright student with a bright future ahead of him who had interned with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas before taking a job there after graduation. "But I need to look into her eyes and ask her why she did that to my son". Hall said the officer's blood was drawn at the scene so that it could be tested for alcohol and drugs.

"At the very early stages of this investigation - initial indications were that they were what we consider circumstances of an officer-involved shooting".

Police called the situation "very unique". "Therefore, we have ceased handling it under our normal officer-involved shooting protocol".

Authorities haven't said how the officer got into Jean's home, or whether his door was open or unlocked. The video footage was supposed to be filmed by one of Jean's neighbors in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, purportedly showing the officer pacing nervously on the landing one floor above.

Hall said at a later press conference that the officer still had not been interviewed. But Merritt said they wanted Guyger "to be treated like every other citizen, and where there is evidence that they've committed a crime, that there's a warrant to be issued and an arrest to be made".

There are still a lot of questions about the events leading up to the shooting.

The mother of a black man who was gunned down at his home by a white Dallas police officer who said she mistook his apartment for her own suggested that her son might still be alive if he were white.

On Friday afternoon, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall requested a manslaughter warrant for the officer.

"We heard cops yelling, but otherwise had no idea what was going on", Hernandez said. He says the swift actions by Chief Hall will help stem the anger people are feeling.

Jean was a graduate of Harding University in Arkansas and was said to be an active member at his church, according to reports. Representatives of the Dallas County District Attorney's Office could not immediately be reached for comment.

"This is a awful tragedy", Jean's employer said.

Though police did not identify Botham Shem Jean as the victim, the Dallas Morning News and relatives on social media confirmed it was him.
