The resistance inside the Trump administration

Democrats have long expressed disdain for US Attorney General Jeff Sessions but some now see him as a bulwark against attacks on the Justice Department Bob Woodward Has a New Book and Donald Trump Is Not Going to Like It

US President Donald Trump reacts to a question during an interview with Reuters in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, August 20, 2018.

The book says Mattis later told associates after a separate incident Trump acted like 'a fifth- or sixth-grader'.

The book said Mr Trump's former lawyer in the Russia probe, John Dowd, doubted the president's ability to avoid perjuring himself should he be interviewed in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference and potential coordination with the Trump campaign.

"The book means nothing".

- Ivanka Trump, when told she was a "staffer" by Steve Bannon: "I'm not a staffer!"

In a Tweet late on Tuesday, Trump said Woodward wrote that he also called Sessions "a dumb southerner".

Cohn, who tried to rein in Trump's protectionist impulses, also planned to remove a similar memo that would have withdrawn the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada, Woodward wrote.

The tell-all book by the reporter who helped bring down president Richard Nixon is the latest to throw the Trump administration into damage-control mode with explosive anecdotes and concerns about the USA commander-in-chief.

It wasn't long before the piece titled 'I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration' got the attention of the target of its ire.

The official described a "two-track" presidency in which Mr Trump says one thing and his staff consciously does another, for example with regard to what he called Mr Trump's "preference for autocrats and dictators".

And among its pages include accounts of Trump mocking Sessions and his accent; Trump's mocking of former National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster and his penchant for dressing "like a beer salesman"; and Trump mocking former Chief of Staff Reince Priebus as "a little rat", according to excerpts published by The Washington Post and The Hill.

Trump labelled the piece a "gutless editorial" and "really a disgrace", in remarks made during an event with sheriffs at the White House.

Mattis dismissed the book as "a uniquely Washington brand of literature", and Trump has called it "total fiction".

The op-ed confirms numerous reports in Bob Woodward's new book Fear, which reported that top officials remove papers from Trump's desk to stop him from seeing and signing them: "The erratic behavior would be more concerning if it weren't for unsung heroes in and around the White House". The President needs to be one of the adults! "This is the worst job I've ever had".

Then after pointing to reports of disorder within the White House, he continued on: "This is unbelievable".

"Fear: Trump in the White House" is out this month (Picture: Simon & Schuster via AP)How has Trump responded to the book?

This op-ed thus supports the narrative pushed by Michael Wolff, author of Fire and Fury, and Bob Woodward, author of the forthcoming Fear, that have made similar claims about Trump aides undermining him while believing that he is incompetent and unsafe.

He later said that he did hear about Woodward's attempts from Graham, but noted that because Woodward didn't speak with him the reporter's upcoming tome would be "very inaccurate", and "that's too bad".
