Emergency management in Escambia County reported to the Weather Service that a tree had blown down on a mobile home, causing one fatality.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Gordon struck about 10 p.m. CT and the storm is forecast to quickly weaken as it moves inland across Mississippi, Louisiana and into Arkansas through Thursday.
More than 27,000 customers are without power Tuesday night as tropical storm Gordon began pushing ashore. The storm was expected to slow down and move inland on the MS or Alabama coast by early Wednesday.
As of Tuesday night, the storm had not reached 74 miles per hour winds, the minimum to become a hurricane.
Meanwhile, Florence has been upgraded to hurricane status, packing 75-mph winds as it moves west-northwest at 12 miles per hour. Levee overtopping and breaches at these locations in 2005 led to devastating flooding from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, the city's eastern swath and in St. Bernard Parish.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. Boaters are evacuating to safe harbors, and motorists are fleeing barrier islands as the Gulf Coast hustles to get ready for the storm.
