Tropical Storm Gordon makes landfall near Alabama-Mississippi border

GOES16-GM-13-1000x1000 ALERT DAY: calm before the storm Tuesday; Gordon moves in Wednesday
Eleanor Moreno | 05 September, 2018, 15:02

Emergency management in Escambia County reported to the Weather Service that a tree had blown down on a mobile home, causing one fatality.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Gordon struck about 10 p.m. CT and the storm is forecast to quickly weaken as it moves inland across Mississippi, Louisiana and into Arkansas through Thursday.

More than 27,000 customers are without power Tuesday night as tropical storm Gordon began pushing ashore. The storm was expected to slow down and move inland on the MS or Alabama coast by early Wednesday.

As of Tuesday night, the storm had not reached 74 miles per hour winds, the minimum to become a hurricane.

Meanwhile, Florence has been upgraded to hurricane status, packing 75-mph winds as it moves west-northwest at 12 miles per hour. Levee overtopping and breaches at these locations in 2005 led to devastating flooding from Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward, the city's eastern swath and in St. Bernard Parish.

A hurricane warning is in effect for the mouth of the Pearl River in MS to the Alabama-Florida border. Boaters are evacuating to safe harbors, and motorists are fleeing barrier islands as the Gulf Coast hustles to get ready for the storm. The National Hurricane Center calls the storm "life threatening". We will have pretty quiet weather across Southeast Louisiana this morning.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has declared a state of emergency for her city, closing all non-essential government offices on Tuesday.

Innes said the price outlook for crude was still bullish, in large part because of USA sanctions targeting Iran's oil sector from November.

Film and TV productions in New Orleans are shutting down early as Tropical Storm Gordon bears down on the Gulf Coast.

"If you live in the coastal counties, especially in surge- and flood-prone areas, it is imperative that you get to a safe place by early afternoon and stay there through Wednesday morning". Hurricane Florence was some 2,400 miles (3,900 kilometers) away from the USA, and lining up behind it, another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa.
