Federer’s ‘unreal’ shot at US Open

Federer sees off Kyrgios in straight sets Tennis: Federer on fire in US Open third-round win over Kyrgios

Greg Rusedski praised Roger Federer for the forehand around the net he hit during the match against Nick Kyrgios.

Playing his first best-of-five set match against this risky, unpredictable and bolshie opponent, Federer began nervously, shanking his first backhand way out of court and struggling to time the ball off that wing for the first 20 minutes or so.

Chasing down a cheeky drop shot, the Swiss hit it inches off the ground and curled it around the net post for a ridiculous victor that earned him a standing ovation from the hollering crowd.

Federer outclassed Kyrgios and gained victory with the scoreline 6-4, 6-1, 7-5 to set up a fourth round contest at the US Open against John Millman on Monday.

But the Australian jokingly played down the shot after the match despite his wide-eyed admiration on court. It left Kyrgios bemused and smiling, an appreciation that wrapped around a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium.

On the changeover, microphones picked up Kyrgios calling the victor "the greatest shot you've ever seen".

Win that, and Federer could find himself in a quarterfinal against 13-time major title victor Novak Djokovic, who faced Richard Gasquet in the third round later Saturday (NZT Sunday).

While it was opportunity lost for Kyrgios, Federer raised his game to imperious levels after the reprieve.

"Today I think he didn't come up with the goods when he really had to, and I was good, I think, by making him hit that extra shot".

"He's a real hard-working player", Federer said of Millman. "Nearly got to the point where I wanted him to start making shots like that, and I finally got it", Kyrgios said.

The Australian had already found himself at the centre of a Flushing Meadows controversy this week when umpire Mohamed Lahyani felt it necessary to get down from his chair during Kyrgios's second round match against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert to urge him to show some interest. I think, you know, just the way he goes about things.

"It was definitely one of the more unique ones", Federer said.

"I need to hire a coach", Kyrgios bellowed as he was broken to trail 4-0 in the second. As well as Federer neutralized his game, the 6-foot-4 Kyrgios said he might be able to learn something from Saturday. Too good on the day, GOAT.

"Look, I know that I'm the clear favorite in the match", Djokovic said. "He loosened up straightaway after that".

"At the beginning it was hard to get any sort of rhythm but I enjoy playing against Nick, he always keeps you on the edge and it's quite entertaining also for the opponent". "When he gets in front, there's not much you can do".
