Complexity Witness: Mass Shooter at Madden Tournament Was Gamer Who Lost
Isabel Fisher | 28 August, 2018, 09:45

The bar was live-streaming the football video game competition when the shooter opened fire.

Two people were killed and at least 13 were injured in a mass shooting at a video game tournament in a shopping and dining complex in Jacksonville city, Florida on Sunday.

Officials identified the two victims who died as Elijah Clayton, 22, and Taylor Robertson, 27.

Following the shooting, EA Sports, the game developer of Madden 19, released the following statement: "We are aware of an incident at a sanctioned Madden Championship Series competition in Jacksonville", the company said. The Madden community lost a few soldiers.

A livestream of the tournament caught the horrifying moment when the weapon's laser landed on Clayton's chest before shots were fired.

All of the injured victims are expected to survive.

Katz, who was also packing extra ammo, only fired one of the guns during the assault, said Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams, although he didn't specify which one. The game was on XBOX One, with third-place winning $1,000 and the first- and second-place winners being flown to the Finals Qualification event.

CompLexity Gaming, purchased in 2017 by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and Goff Capital founder John Goff, sent Gjoka to compete in the two-day Madden tournament last Friday, according to Gjoka's Twitter feed.

Survivors said Katz snapped after being eliminated from the tournament.

Williams said police used surveillance video to help piece together details.

"The gamer added: "[He was here] all weekend. He had shades on, he didnt speak to anybody. Even after we played.

"They were respected, positive and skilled competitors, the epitome of the players and personalities at the heart of our community", Wilson said. "He didn't say anything".

Professional gamer Justin Barone told the Herald via direct message on Twitter, "I was in the room when it happened, heard a pop and knew what it was".

"I think that the e-sports industry as a whole is going to have to step back and take a look at further strengthening our security".

"As you can imagine, we are devastated by yet another senseless act of gun violence", Clayton's cousin, Brandi Pettijohn, said while reading a statement. "He loved his family more than anything".
