‘Patriot Of The Highest Order’: Politicians React To McCain’s Death

John McCain Dies at 81 Following Battle With Cancer Rowdy, rebellious and reflective, McCain left behind a roadmap for America's political rebirth

President Barack Obama, who ran against McCain for the presidency in 2008, said that Americans remain in the former senator's debt because of all that he did for the country.

President Donald Trump said, via Twitter, his "deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain". 'Our hearts and prayers are with you!'

McCain denounced Trump for among other things his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders the senator described as foreign "tyrants".

In one of his final speeches on the Senate floor July 25, McCain implored his fellow senators to work together again to get things done for the American people.

Paul Kengor, a political scientist at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, said a story about McCain's family life demonstrated to him the kind of man McCain was.

"In an era filled with cynicism about national unity and public service, John McCain's life shone as a bright example". His family and friends will be in our prayers. "God bless and thank you all".

The secretary of defence said the U.S. had "lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country".

Former President George W. Bush, who defeated McCain in the 2000 Republican primary, issued a statement calling McCain "a man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order".

A police escort accompanied the hearse that carried his body, as a fiery sunset cast its last light over the rustic countryside McCain loved dearly, and local residents came bearing flowers for the late political titan. His impact on America hasn't ended.

The news of his passing came more than a year after the news that he was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of cancer that begins in the brain.

And in October, receiving the Liberty Medal in Philadelphia, he issued what many saw as a repudiation of Trump's "America first" ethos: "To fear the world we have organised and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of worldwide leadership and our duty to remain "the last best hope of earth" for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other exhausted dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history".

'An American president does not lead the free world by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections, ' McCain said. Our country owes a lot to John McCain and we will greatly miss him. Bush said. "Some voices are so vibrant, it is hard to think of them stilled". He was a piblic servant in the finest traditions of our country. "I had another long, if not as long, career before I arrived here, another profession that was profoundly rewarding, and in which I had experiences and friendships that I revere". "With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family". In a conciliatory move, McCain spoke at the 2006 commencement at Falwell's Liberty University and, in an even greater outreach to the religious right, chose then-Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, an anti-abortion evangelical, as his 2008 running mate. "He would occasionally be in a bad place with various members, including myself, and when this would blow over it was like nothing ever happened", McConnell said Saturday after a GOP state dinner in Lexington, Kentucky. "My thoughts and prayers are with Cindy and his entire family", she continued.

"He was a skilled, tough politician, as well as a trusted colleague alongside whom Hillary was honored to serve in the Senate", the statement read. "I will always be especially grateful for his leadership in our successful efforts to normalise relations with Vietnam".
