Police in Chicagosaid that a spate of deadly shootings over the weekend left at least 10 people dead and at least 59 wounded.
Two people were killed and 28 were wounded between midnight and 3 a.m., including at least 13 teenagers, one of whom was shot in the head and killed, the Sun-Times reported.
Most of the shootings happened in poor neighborhoods on the West and South Sides where gangs are entrenched, said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, standing next to the mayor. "It's the same people pulling the triggers". This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of the city.
The shooting happened about 6:50 a.m.in the first block of North Leclaire, police said. "Mayor Emanuel is out of touch with reality". The violence prompted Rudy Giuliani to enter the fray with a series of tweets backing Garry McCarthy, a former Chicago policechief who hopes to unseat Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "They hold me accountable".
"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", Waller told reporters.

"We'll also be conducting coordinated enforcement missions to target individuals that are driving the violence in these areas and focus on where we believe retaliatory violence may occur".
Johnson expressed frustration with the blowback at the police department following violent summer weekends.
The Tribune, which tracks shooting statistics, reported that shootings in the city have actually declined, with 532 fewer shootings as of August 1 than the same time in 2017.
