Police in Chicago said that a spate of deadly shootings over the weekend left at least 10 people dead and at least 59 wounded.

Two people were killed and 28 were wounded between midnight and 3 a.m., including at least 13 teenagers, one of whom was shot in the head and killed, the Sun-Times reported.

Most of the shootings happened in poor neighborhoods on the West and South Sides where gangs are entrenched, said Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, standing next to the mayor. "It's the same people pulling the triggers". This isn't a widespread issue among citizens of the city.

The shooting happened about 6:50 a.m.in the first block of North Leclaire, police said. "Mayor Emanuel is out of touch with reality". Johnson react to weekend violenceMayor Rahm Emanuel said Monday morning he visited Stroger and Mt. Sinai hospitals to thank those that treated the victims of the violence.

The violence prompted Rudy Giuliani to enter the fray with a series of tweets backing Garry McCarthy, a former Chicago police chief who hopes to unseat Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "They hold me accountable".

"I promise this city that we won't be defeated, we won't be overrun by that small group, that small element that is committing these reckless acts", Waller told reporters.

"You know what I never hear? They get a pass from everybody, and they shouldn't", he said. He was on the sidewalk with five other people, including a 14-year-old boy, when two men came up and started shooting, police said.

As of Friday, at least 1,700 have been shot in the city this year, well below each of the last two years, particularly 2016 when violence hit records unseen for two decades. Three other people were wounded, one of them critically, and treated at various hospitals. A 32-year-old man was shot twice in the arm and a 33-year-old man was shot in the hip. Of those victims, 25 were injured in five mass shootings. The 17-year-old suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead on the scene by police.

"We'll also be conducting coordinated enforcement missions to target individuals that are driving the violence in these areas and focus on where we believe retaliatory violence may occur".

Johnson expressed frustration with the blowback at the police department following violent summer weekends.

The Tribune, which tracks shooting statistics, reported that shootings in the city have actually declined, with 532 fewer shootings as of August 1 than the same time in 2017.

"Despite what we saw this weekend, I'm still pleased between CPD's work, the mayor's investments, and the work of our community members, that we're still reducing our gun violence this year", Johnson said. (Many of the guns used in Chicago shootings are taken over the border from neighboring states, where lax firearm laws stand in contrast to Chicago's strict rules.) Last January, President Trump threatened to send in the National Guard to quell the violence, before sending in more traditional forms of federal help later in the year.
