"The strategy is meant to prepare Zimbabwe mentally to accept fake presidential results".

Members of the military gesture to the photographer as they patrol the streets of the capital Harare, Zimbabwe, August 2, 2018. "We know that people will be beaten - especially in rural areas, like what they were doing before", said Harare shop worker Tracy Kubara, 26.

"Opposition parties have never enjoyed the freedom of meeting their supporters the way they have been doing‚ so they have perhaps misinterpreted our understanding to being weak‚" he said.

Zimbabwe's electoral commission had said it would start announcing results for the presidential race on Wednesday but that was then pushed back at least 24 hours.

Mr Chamisa, a lawyer and pastor who leads the opposition MDC party, has gone further, saying his own count shows that he won the election and that he is ready to form the next government.

The commission had said there was no rigging or cheating in the first national election since the end of Robert Mugabe's almost four decade rule.

The House of Assembly of Parliament has 210 seats and ZANU-PF's two-thirds majority would allow it to change the constitution at will.

A voter in Harare said Zimbabwe was eager to hear the election results as soon as possible.

The results of the race are expected on Saturday and the European Union mission says a more detailed statement on how the election results were handled will be released soon.

He also urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to speed up the announcement of the results of the presidential vote.

A Harare-based political analyst with Zimbabwe Democracy Institute, Pedzisai Ruhanya, said the results released so far could be a reflection of the will of the people but were not ideal.

Rioting erupted on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time) in Zimbabwe's capital as opposition supporters clashed with police and army troops over delays in announcing results from the presidential election, the country's first since the fall of longtime leader Robert Mugabe.

Meanwhile, officials from the electoral commission were read the results from the parliamentary contest in a stuffy meeting room in the Rainbow Hotel. We've more votes than ED [Emmerson Dambudzo].

Priscilla Chigumba, who chairs the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, said on Tuesday it was moving more slowly than expected.

"You can't rig our election.this is a military government", the crowd shouted. "Equally, we hold the party and its leadership responsible for any loss of life, injury or damage of property that arise from these acts of political violence which they have aided and abetted", he said.

Via his Twitter handle, President Mnangagwa warned his supporters and the citizenry to desist from making statements that could stir political animosity.

"Rocks were thrown into the compound of the ruling ZANU-PF party".

Vote counting is still underway to determine the country's next president, a race many analysts predict 75-year-old Mnangagwa will win.

"It is imperative that the results process is credible and transparent, with a full breakdown by polling station so that confidence in the outcome can be assured", Brok said.
