The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission said ZANU-PF had won 109 of the 153 seats confirmed so far, while 41 seats went to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

The commission postponed announcing results of Monday's tightly fought presidential race, pitting President Emmerson Mnangagwa against opposition leader Nelson Chamisa. "There are 58 seats to be declared".

It is the first ballot since Robert Mugabe was ousted after 37 years in power.

Biti's statement came as Zec chairperson Priscilla Chigumba delayed the initial announcement of the incoming results by almost two hours, and later announced results from seven House of Assembly constituencies.

Those results are likely to be fiercely disputed by the opposition party, whose 40-year-old leader Chamisa has repeatedly said he wouldn't accept anything less than victory.

"We collated the results from our agents at all polling stations and what they reflected is nothing else except victory for MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa, and we demand that they make those V11 forms public".

Electoral officials warned that gathering the results of Monday's poll, which President Emmerson Mnangagwa said looked "extremely positive" for him, was "nowhere near" complete and no announcement would be made until as late as Saturday.

The regional SADC bloc, in its preliminary report, said Wednesday that the campaign and election had "proceeded in a peaceful and orderly manner and were largely in line" in Zimbabwean law.

Priscilla Chigumba, who chairs the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, said on Tuesday it was moving more slowly than expected.

Several hundred MDC supporters gathered outside the party headquarters in Harare, chanting and shouting that they had won the elections.

"They've rigged these elections".

Opposition supporters clogged the streets of Zimbabwe's capital Wednesday as the country awaited the results of the first leadership election since the end of Robert Mugabe's strongman rule previous year.

Biti had earlier accused the electoral commission of deliberately delaying the publication of results to help Mnangagwa's ruling ZANU-PF party.

Mr. Brok said that ballots for the presidential vote were counted first in polling stations.

If no presidential candidate wins more than 50 per cent of the vote, a runoff will be held September 8. "We won the popular vote (and) will defend it", Chamisa said.

"The more the presidential vote is delayed, the more it calls into question the population's confidence in the election process", said former Liberian leader Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the lead observer of a USA monitoring mission.

MDC Alliance youths are engaged in running battles with Zimbabwe Army and Police in Harare, accusing ZEC and Zanu PF of vote manipulation.

The new government must tackle mass unemployment and an economy shattered by the seizure of white-owned farms under Mugabe, the collapse of agriculture, hyperinflation and an investment exodus.
