Police officer resigns ahead of hearing on Puerto Rico shirt incident
14 July, 2018, 05:32
A police officer who drew criticism for allegedly failing to intervene in a dispute between a man and a woman over the woman's Puerto Rico flag shirt has resigned, officials said Wednesday evening. The video shows him approaching her, asking why she is wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt with the words "Puerto Rico" written below the neckline. When the new officers arrived, they arrested Trybus on charges of misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.
Timothy Trybus, 62, originally faced misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct charges for the incident where he angrily confronted the woman and told her she "shouldn't be wearing that" - referring to the shirt.
Trybus is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
The harasser didn't seem to realize that Puerto Rico is, in fact, part of the United States America.
My wife and I wanted to let her know that we support her and we admire her.
Still the 36-minute video of the confrontation posted by Mia Irizarry, the woman targeted in the vide left many people upset.
"Officer, officer, I feel highly uncomfortable", Irizarry tells Connor, who does not appear to respond to her as he is addressed, and can be seen turning his back and walking toward his police vehicle.
'That officer did absolutely nothing he did absolutely zero, ' she says in the clip.
'The United States of America is a nation that was built and thrives on diversity, ' Rosello continued in a separate tweet. "Can you please grab him?"

You see, her birthday party at a park in Cook County, Illinois didn't turn out the way she expected. "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here".
Rosello also called on Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle to take the matter "into her hands".
But he said the officer considered it "an unfortunate incident" and felt he was not "given a fair shake". These angry outbursts and attacks do not represent our values here at the Forest Preserve system and in Cook County, and are not representing who we are as a country. In the background, a police officer is standing outside the park pavilion.
Connor was initially placed on desk duty as the investigation got underway.
Authorities said an investigation was launched the same day the incident in the park occurred.
Connor's resignation was "a commonsense decision after his inaction and failure to serve Cook County", Cook County Commissioner Jesus Garcia said, according to The Chicago-Sun Times.
