Don't let McConnell's hypocrisy determine the Supreme Court's future

Indian-American judge Amul Thapar has not made it to the shortlist of three candidates from among which US President Donald Trump is likely to nominate his pick for the US Supreme Court justice, a media report said today. "I think it's a bit of a scare tactic and rank speculation more than anything else".

"These are the people, keep in mind, who consider themselves to be the most open-minded, the most tolerant", he said.

"Nobody really knows", Leo said on ABC's "This Week".

Democrats see the seat being vacated by Justice Kennedy, a conservative judge who sometimes sided with the court's liberal wing, as critical to maintaining abortion rights and key provisions of former President Barack Obama's healthcare plan.

According to National Public Radio (NPR), Trump has reduced the names of the potential nominees to three judges - Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett and Raymond Kethledge.

He said he expected to decide Sunday night or Monday morning in advance of his scheduled 9 p.m.

Graham said. "So red-state Democrats are going to have a very hard decision, and I hope every Republican will rally around these picks, because they're all outstanding".

Thapar, 49, a Cincinnati-based federal appeals court judge, was among the first four candidates interviewed by Trump on July 2. "They're good judges. I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court".

In the course of the 2016 election, Trump made changing the face of the USA supreme court a key campaign pledge that was instrumental in firing up his base of right-wing conservative voters.

While the U.S. Senate once required a 60-vote supermajority to overcome blocking tactics against Supreme Court nominees, the Republican majority changed the rules previous year during the debate on Justice Neil Gorsuch. Republicans now control that number of Senate seats, although one of their number, Senator John McCain, is at home in Arizona battling cancer.

Leading Republican US senators also toured Sunday TV studios predicting that their party would stand united over the confirmation process, and warning Democratic senators from conservative "red" states won by Trump in 2016 that if they opposed the nomination they would have to answer to voters at the midterm elections in November.
