A woman who was poisoned by a military-grade nerve agent in southwest England died Sunday, eight days after police think she touched a contaminated item that has not been found.

"The 45-year-old man who fell ill with Dawn remains critically ill in hospital and our thoughts are with him and his family as well", he said in a statement.

Her death comes four months after the poisoning of.

Britain has accused Russia of poisoning the former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with Novichok in what is the first known offensive use of such a chemical weapon on European soil since World War II.

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, Britain's top anti-terrorism police officer, said the death "has only served to strengthen our resolve" to find those responsible.

Police say the nerve agent that sickened Rowley and Sturgess was the same type that nearly killed the Skripals, but scientists haven't been able to tell whether it was from the same batch.

Britain's Home Secretary Sajid Javid, center, exits the police cordon at Muggleton Road where counter-terrorism officers are investigating after a couple were left in a critical condition when they were exposed to the nerve agent Novichok, in Amesbury, England, Sunday July 8, 2018. Britain blames Russian Federation for the attack, however, Russian Federation has denied the allegation.

Basu said that Sturgess leaves behind three children, and offered thoughts and prayers for the woman's family. "Police and security officials are working urgently to establish the facts of this incident, which is now being investigated as a murder". "The government is committed to providing full support to the local community as it deals with this tragedy".

The Met urged anyone who may have information that could assist with this investigation and would urge anyone to help to contact police by calling 0800 789 321. The hospital's medical director, Dr. Christine Blanshard, said the staff "worked tirelessly to save Dawn". Still, more than 20 other countries have expelled Russian diplomats in a show of support for the UK.

Dawn Sturgess died after exposure to a nerve agent in southeast England.

He also said: "There is no evidence that (Ms Sturgess and Mr Rowley) visited any of the sites that were decontaminated following the attempted murders of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in March".

Britain's public health authority acknowledged on Friday the concerns of people living in the area after the two incidents involving Novichok, but said it was confident that the risk to the public remained low.
