Nawaz Sharif, the former prime minister of Pakistan, has been sentenced to ten years in jail on corruption charges, marking a final, ignominious downfall for one of the great survivors of Pakistani politics.

Sharif is now in London, where his wife is receiving medical treatment for cancer.

The PTI chairman said that his party raised the issue in the parliament but nothing was done, adding that Nawaz Sharif's sons admitted of the ownership of London flats when Panama Papers scandal emerged.

Nawaz and his family are facing three corruption cases in the accountability court after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed references against them in light of the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case a year ago.

Sharif's daughter, Maryam, widely seen as his chosen political heir, was sentenced to seven years in prison. He denies drawing the monthly salary.

"PML-N will not perish politically as it has a strong base in northern Punjab".

The decision against the Sharifs comes ahead of the July 25 polls, as well as media complaints that the press is being muzzled.

Throughout the case, they and their political supporters have cast the allegations as part of a campaign to discredit the former premier - allegedly led by Pakistan's army, which has made little secret of its dislike for Sharif.

The former opposition leader of the National Assembly said such a judgement at this time would raise different concerns, which may go in Nawaz Sharif's favour.

The verdict marked a further fall for the PML-N supremo, who has been Pakistan's prime minister three times but never completed a term. Both of them will be barred from contesting in the upcoming Pakistan general elections.

Sharif has a history of conflict with the military even though his political career was initially nurtured by military dictator Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s.

The Panama Papers leak in 2015 revealed several of Sharif's children had links to offshore companies, which were allegedly used to channel funds and buy foreign assets - including luxury flats in Avenfield House, on London's Park Lane.

Khan is running on a socially conservative, anti-corruption platform.

It is alleged that the properties were allegedly bought with graft money in 1990s when he served twice as the prime minister.

1949 - Nawaz Sharif is born into a Kashmiri family of industrialists in the eastern city of Lahore.

By convicting Sharif, the court has in fact selectively done the application of justice.

In addition to the sentencing, Sharif and Maryam have been fined £8 million and £2 million respectively.
