Two stoppage-time goals from Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min in Kazan proved just that.

The changes didn't produce the desired effect early on, with Germany's attack once again slow and disjointed, struggling to break down a South Korean back line that had looked fragile in their last game against Mexico, a 2-0 loss.

South Korea national football team players show their respect to fans after they beat Germany 2-0 in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group F match at Kazan Arena in Kazan, Russia, on June 27, 2018.

Germany recovered from their opening defeat to Mexico by snatching a dramatic win over Sweden courtesy of a stoppage-time goal from Toni Kroos.

Germany have been eliminated in the first round of the World Cup for the first time in 80 years, since a defeat in 1938 at the hands of Switzerland, where they drew the first match 1-1, before being beaten 4-2 in the replay.

Paulinho and Thiago Silva scored a goal each for Brazil and the five-time champions will next face Mexico in the round of 16 on Monday in Samara.

Move over Hirving Lozano and Chicharito, Mexico fans now have a new have a new set of heroes at the World Cup after South Korea's late victory over Germany.

"It was only after the match that we found out the other score (and that Korea didn't qualify), of course we were disappointed and that's why some of us cried".

The Germans, who have won four World Cups and finished runners-up four times, entered this year's tournament heavily backed to retain their title.

Germany were caught out at the back as they threw men forward in search for a late victor, with Kim Young-Gwon flicking home inside the box two minutes into injury time.

South Korea's win was a huge boost to Mexico, advancing it through to the knockout stage. "Shocked because we didn't manage to pull it off and beat Korea Republic and we lost this game".

We've done very well and we're happy and we deserved to win.

The goal was ruled out offside on field but confirmed by use of the Video Assistant Referee.

"First we need to congratulate our two opponents who made it out of the group", said Loew. In Germany we had chances, but shot Goretzki handled by the goalkeeper, and Werner and Hummels from a killer position did not hit the target.

The defending champions qualified in style but struggled in their World Cup warm-up games, and they could not turn their form around when they arrived in Russian Federation.
