In recent days a number of high-profile Democrats, including the New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio, and New York senator Kirsten Gillibrand, have called for the agency to be disbanded with a new immigration enforcement program brought in in its place.

In a couple of weekend tweets, Trump praised ICE as "one of the smartest, toughest and most spirited law enforcement groups" and said there's "Zero chance" that the border security agency will be abolished.

The letter is likely to bolster the growing movement in Democratic politics and activist circles to abolish Ice. In interviews with multiple outlets, she has said the government "maybe" or "probably" should "start from scratch" on an immigration enforcement agency.

Both Democrats' comments came after Tuesday's primary win by progressive, Democratic Socialist candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over Democratic incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley for New York's 14th congressional district.

"I'm not leaving this fight", Homan said, adding he will be able to speak more freely after he leaves office.

"The president's deeply immoral actions have made it obvious: We need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our morality and that works", Warren said.

Pocan said that shift decreases the confidence of local communities in which ICE must work.

"Even the cops don't like us anymore, because they're listening to the news also", said an agent who spoke on the condition of anonymity. "So I beg everyone, please release these children, give my son back to me", she said through an interpreter, weeping.

As the Trump administration is stepping up mass deportations, separating families at the U.S. -Mexico border, and interning immigrant children in cages, calls to abolish ICE have spread from a grass-roots Twitter phenomenon to the political mainstream.

"We're going to maintain a presence there and ensure the safety and security of the facility", he said.

ICE has been in the center of the storm over family separations at the border.

An estimated 30,000 protesters marched from Manhattan to Brooklyn with pins and signs that read, "Abolish ICE", joining more than 700 other rallies across the United States organized by the Families Belong Together-Freedom for Immigrants March.

"ICE is now the second-largest criminal investigative agency in the United States, second only to the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says the new nominee has the leadership needed to accomplish the crucial national security missions facing the country today.
