DeAndre Jordan opts out of deal with Clippers

DeAndre Jordan Salah Mejri Dallas Mavericks Working On DeAndre Jordan Trade: Report

Los Angeles Clippers star center DeAndre Jordan did not exercise his $24.1 million player option and will test free agency, per the Clippers' Twitter account.

After having second thoughts and getting recruited by his Los Angeles teammates to re-sign, he reneged and signed a four-year, $88 million deal to stay with the Clippers. One of the more reliable players in the National Basketball Association, he played all 82 games three straight seasons, and owns the Los Angeles Clippers' record for consecutive games played with 322.

The Dallas Mavericks are the heavy favorites to land Jordan, just a few years after he spurned Dallas at the last minute and re-signed with Los Angeles.

Jordan was due to make $24.1 million in the 2018-19 season. He's also average 10.7 rebounds over his career, including at least 13 a game the past five seasons. Jordan can't officially sign a new contract until the moratorium ends next Friday, however.

The 29-year-old Jordan averaged 12 points and a career-high 15.2 rebounds in 2017-18.

While nothing is certain in free agency, Jordan joining the Mavs has felt like one of the surest things this offseason.

Even though Dallas declined Dirk Nowitzki's player option, the Mavs plan on resigning the veteran big man. Jordan is both close friends with Kevin Durant, and a former client of Bob Myers, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.

The Mavericks have now addressed the frontcourt and backcourt this offseason. This is likely Jordan's last chance to cash in on a max deal, so he's going to make it count. There was a possibility that the Clippers and Mavericks could have worked out a trade.
