Samsung and Apple have been at each other's throats for over seven years due to patent infringements, but on June 27, 2018, it was revealed that the two companies had finally reached a settlement.
What resulted was a seemingly endless legal battle that would see both sides lob multiple infringement claims and counterclaims, including Apple at one point getting some Samsung phones banned from sale in the US.
Now, nearly seven years since the feud begun, the companies have finally reached a settlement and the case is being closed, according to a court document.
"This case has always been about more than money", the statement read. Some of the specific features Apple feels Samsung stole include home screen app grids, tap to zoom, and "bounceback" scrolling.
In August 2012, Apple won the initial jury verdict and was awarded US$1.05 billion (NZ$1.55 billion), but Koh ordered a retrial after deciding that the jury added an extra US$399 million for violation of additional trademarks that weren't included in the trial.
With the settlement of remaining claims and counterclaims in the Apple v. Samsung fight, Apple ends a long battle that its late co-founder Steve Jobs once fervently waged. Apple declined to comment on the agreement, but an Apple rep referred CNN to a company statement released last month that said, "Apple ignited the smartphone revolution with iPhone and it is a fact that Samsung blatantly copied our design". "We believe deeply in the value of design, and our teams work tirelessly to create innovative products that delight our customers", Apple wrote.
The case had been sent back to the district court following a Supreme Court decision to revisit an earlier $400 million damage award.
Samsung's lawyers appealed the case, bringing down the compensation of $1 billion to $400 million in 2015 at the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
