U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeosaid he will not put a timeline on negotiations with North Korea, but the U.S. will instead "constantly reassess" the regime's commitment to denuclearization as the two countries seek to implement a bilateral agreement signed at a historic summit in Singapore, CNN reports.
Kim's cancellation of the tradition follows President Trump's decision to halt war games with United States troops and the South Korean military while negotiations to denuclearize the North are ongoing.
"We hope that we will have an ongoing process of making progress", CNN quoted him as saying.
The U.S.is set to give North Korea a specific timeline to complete denuclearization, while outlining specific requests.
Pompeo told CNN that Trump's decision to suspend U.S. military exercises in the region will continue "only so long as there is a good-faith negotiation progress, productive results being achieved".
A year ago one official said all members of the ruling Workers' party and residents of Pyongyang were "aflame with the will to completely remove the U.S. imperialists, the sworn enemy, from the globe".
North Korea's state-run media is broadcasting the message of relaxed tensions across the country.
"Japan should stop its large-scale military drills and the boosting of its military capacity aimed at attacking (Korea), scrap its hostile policy against us, break with the past and show its sincerity towards peace", it said in a commentary.
"I think the way we are going to approach North Korea is we are going to have some data points pretty soon if they are operating in good faith or not", the official said.
North Korea is believed to have 170-mm self-propelled artillery guns with a range of almost 40 miles and 240-mm multiple rocket launchers.
On Monday, Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White walked those comments back in a pair of tweets.
Pyongyang's tightly controlled official media are normally packed with anti-American invective on June 25, when the North launched a mass invasion of the South in 1950.
"Any statements by DoD personnel regarding the DPRK are exclusively in reference to the military aspects of the negotiations", White added, mentioning the "indefinite suspension of major exercises or logistical support for the dignified transfer of remains".
