Egypt and Saudi level at halftime after Salah strike, penalty

Egypt attacker Mohamed Salah Mohamed Salah's goal against Russia was not enough to keep Egypt's qualification hopes alive

Goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary became the oldest player in World Cup history after being named in the starting XI for Egypt against Saudi Arabia, and he saved a penalty in his side's 2-1 defeat.

Egypt's appearance in this summer's World Cup was their first at a finals since 1990, when El-Hadary was still just a promising goalkeeper.

Salem Aldawsari scored with nearly the last kick, shooting from a tight angle inside the Egypt penalty area and poking the ball past El Hadary.

It was Salah's second goal at the World Cup, and Egypt's first in open play at the World Cup since 1934.

There have been suggestions that Salah will quit the Egypt team following the conclusion of the World Cup.

He paid for the wasted opportunity deep into first-half stoppage time when Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan awarded Saudi Arabia a penalty and Salman Al-Faraj converted from the spot. The decision was confirmed after a video review and the penalty was taken in the sixth minute of injury time.

Juan Antonio Pizzi's men found the early rhythm as Hussain Al Moghawi was presented a few yards of open space and chose to test Essam El Hadary, but the effort was skewed wide.

El Hadary was unable to repeat the feat when Alfaraj lined up against him at the end of the half, going the wrong way and having no chance.

That save kept Egypt up 1-0, but he couldn't go 2-for-2 on penalty kicks.

El Hadary, who is 45 years and 161 days old, is at his first World Cup for the Pharaohs and won his 157th cap.

It has been a busy World Cup for both referees and their VAR helpers, who between them have set a new benchmark at the worldwide celebration of football.

Egypt crashed out of the 2018 edition of the tournament in Russian Federation without picking up a single point after a late defeat against Saudi Arabia and two other losses at the group stage.
