An instagram of the baby captioned "Welcome to our village wee one", had reached 10,000 likes after just a few minutes.

The former prime minister said attitudes had changed since she'd entered politics and that was a good thing.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to her first child, a baby girl. Incidentally, Ms Ardern's baby was born on what would have been Ms Bhutto's birthday.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Australia's Labor Party leader Bill Shorten also congratulated the couple on the birth.

The birth capped an eventful year for Ardern who became prime minister last October, three months after inheriting the leadership of the Labour Party when it was languishing in the polls. She said in other fields, women have been combining motherhood and paid work for decades, but it has only recently become more manageable thanks to paid parental leave.

The Prime Minister's Office is on the ninth floor of the Beehive, where her staff will remain. But she didn't take maternity leave, meaning that first goes to Ardern.

'I do not want to create a false impression that all women should be super-human or super-women, ' she said.

Less than 24 hours into her new role as Labour leader, Ardern was asked twice about whether she had plans to have children which prompted an worldwide outcry.

Italy's Licia Ronziulli was snapped with her six-week old child in the European parliament in 2010, and has regularly been accompanied by her little person since then - to the joy of photographers.

According to interviews the politician gave when she announced her pregnancy in January, Gayford will be transitioning into the role of stay-at-home dad.

Under the arrangement, Ms Ardern will still be consulted on major decisions, including issues of national security.

New Zealand has long had a progressive reputation and was the first country to give women the right to vote in 1893 and Ardern is the country's third female prime minister. One group started a campaign, #KnitForJacinda, to knit baby clothes for hospitals and women's shelters in celebration of Ardern's news.
