Kylian Mbappe Makes History As France Battle Into Last 16

France won the game Peru won our hearts’ – Twitter grieves over Los Incas World Cup exit Kylian Mbappe Makes History As France Battle Into Last 16

Kylian Mbappe's first World Cup goal was enough to send France into the last 16 with a 1-0 win against Peru in Group C on Thursday.

When Olivier Giroud's shot took a deflection off a defender and looped over goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, the teenager was on hand to tap in a simple chance. Russian Federation and Uruguay have already qualified from Group A in an order yet to be determined.

Peru manager Ricardo Gareca used this formation throughout qualifying, and reaped the rewards as Peru outscored Argentina and Colombia, with Guerrero scoring five goals.

However, Peru were unable to find a way through and Ricardo Gareca's side - who have yet to find the net in Russian Federation - are certain to be knocked out.

But despite late calls from the Peru bench to pile everyone forward with every attack and set-piece, they could not find their way through as France squeezed through into the last 16 with another unconvincing performance.

Peru, needing a point to survive in the competition, offered more than just spirited resistance in the second half but were rarely able to test Hugo Lloris on the occasion of his 100th cap.

Chances were flowing for France, Raphael Varane missing with a header before Gallese saved with his legs to deny Griezmann after Giroud found his strike partner with a headed pass.

Captain Guerrero, starting after seeing a 14-month drug ban frozen to allow him to play in Russian Federation, could have been Peru's hero but his 87th-minute free kick was easy pickings for Lloris as France settled for a one-goal victory.

But Guerrero's next contribution so almost put Peru ahead.

'He's the best striker at the moment in the world, ' he told the BBC while working as a pundit during Wednesday's Group B game.

But they were subdued in the second half, suffering frustration in the closing minutes when Blaise Matuidi shot just wide and Giroud had an effort blocked that ballooned over the top of the goal. Midfielder Pedro Aquino went closest to levelling when his stunning strike cannoned off the bar. Or can Peru avoid another defeat and upset France?

Substitute Ousmane Dembele - dropped for Giroud - could have wrapped up the points in the 82nd minute but fired wide, as France appeared to have settled for a one-goal victory.
