In a later statement released on Twitter, the sheriff's office said: "The adult male that was taken to the hospital has been pronounced dead".

The 20-year-old was apparently at a motorcycle dealership when a gunman approached him critically wounding him. He dropped his debut album 17 in August 2017, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

An eyewitness to the shooting tells TMZ that the rapper had "no pulse" after being shot, but Variety was unable to confirm that report.

XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, died on Monday after he was fatally shot in what police suspect was a robbery in Miami, Florida.

XXXTentacion pleaded not guilty to multiple felony counts, including witness tampering, and had been under house arrest for a time while he awaited trial.

At least one of them fired, and then both suspects fled the scene in a dark SUV, Concepcion said.

Superstar DJ Diplo tweeted a photo of himself with XXXTentacion with the caption "Thanks for inspiring me".

Kanye West said: "rest in peace ..."

"Without any promotion in traditional terms, his second album, entitled "?", debuted at the top of the Billboard album chart in March. J. Cole had similarly kind words, calling him an "enormous talent" and saying he had a "strong desire to be a better person". He routinely got into fistfights with fans at his concerts. You could look at his face and smile and he was just a normal kid like us.

He was released from jail on house arrest late last year and was released from house arrest earlier this year to allow him to tour. In response, Spotify recently removed all of XXXTentacion's music from its curated playlists, though that policy was quickly rolled back after others in the industry, including Kendrick Lamar's manager, threatened to retaliate.

Videos of what appeared to be Onfroy unresponsive in the driver seat of a vehicle circulated on social media Monday.
