Boyd said agents were chasing the SUV when it lost control and overturned. Fourteen people were inside, including the driver and passenger.

Border Patrol agents attempted to stop the vehicle when the chase ensued and were soon joined by Dimmit County deputies, KFDM reported.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials say four were pronounced dead at the scene midday Sunday.

The driver, a suspected smuggler and also believed to be a USA citizen, survived the crash, according to NBC News.

According to the sheriff's office, four individuals died on scene and one later died in the hospital. The passenger in the front seat is reportedly in police custody.

Several people were arrested after another agent stopped the second vehicle, but the third vehicle didn't stop when an agent tried to pull it over, Customs and Border Protection said.

Another passenger, also reported to be a US citizen, is under arrest in connection with the possible case of human smuggling.

Most of these chases are related to drug or human smuggling, Boyd added.

The sheriff said he hadn't spoken to Border Patrol on the exact cause of the pursuit and nature of the crash. "I think we need a wall in my opinion". In 2012, 15 unauthorized immigrants were killed in Goliad County, Tex. when their truck ran off a highway. Twelve immigrants were ejected and four died at the scene when the vehicle crashed and rolled over, according to Boyd.

Local law enforcement officers were familiar with the driver, who was in the area last week to either pick up undocumented immigrants or to scout, the sheriff said.

A criminal complaint said the driver in that case admitted to investigators that he traveled from Laredo to San Antonio.
