Former Trump campaign chairman Manafort sent to jail

Hearing on alleged witness tampering could send Paul Manafort to jail while he awaits trial Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pending trial, citing obstruction charges

Manafort hasn't been convicted of any crimes or sentenced to prison.

The judge said that, although she had "struggled" with the decision, she couldn't "turn a blind eye" to his behavior.

None of the charges against them relate to alleged collusion with Russian Federation.

The former Trump campaign manager, 69, was accused of sending WhatsApp messages to potential witnesses in Robert Mueller's probe of Russian interference in the 2016 election, so a judge made a decision to jail him to stop this happening again.

Paul Manafort arrives for a hearing at US District Court on June 15, 2018 in Washington, DC.

The case against him includes failing to register in the United States as a lobbyist for a foreign government.

Manafort also pleaded not guilty to the latest indictment on Friday.

While most of the charges against Manafort predate his work for Trump, some relate to activities that took place into 2017, including alleged bank fraud and money laundering, according to prosecutors.

Manafort is under investigation for his alleged role with Russia's possible meddling in the 2016 presidential election along with conspiracy to launder money and defraud the US, which he has plead not guilty to, Reuters reported.

"You have abused the trust placed in you six months ago", she said.

He will now remain in jail until his trial on dozens of charges, including financial fraud, money laundering and making false statements. In December, they accused him of violating a court's gag order by helping ghostwrite an op-ed piece defending his work in Ukraine for an English-language newspaper in Kiev, the Ukrainian capital.

Jackson said she was "very troubled" by Manafort's contacts with witnesses. I thought about this long and hard, Mr. Manafort. He said a no-contact order with others in the case could achieve that result and said the current release terms had not explicitly included that restriction.

Manafort’s lawyers have argued that the evidence suggesting he tampered with witnesses is thin. Manafort has also pleaded not guilty to those charges. One document was a 2013 memo from Manafort to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. Four days later, a grand jury indicted Manafort anew, accusing him and an associate of witness tampering. Kilimnik is believed to be in Moscow - and therefore probably safe from arrest because Russian Federation does not extradite its citizens.

Kilimnik, whom USA authorities suspect of having ties to Russian intelligence, served as Manafort's point man in Ukraine.

The indictment accused them of attempting to call, text and send encrypted messages starting in February to two people from a political discussion group - the so-called Hapsburg Group - that worked with Manafort to promote Ukraine´s interests in a bid to sway their testimony.
