Measure to split California into 3 states qualifies for November ballot
15 June, 2018, 05:56
California's 168-year run as a single entity, hugging the continent's edge for hundreds of miles and sprawling east across mountains and desert, could come to an end next year - as a controversial plan to split the Golden State into three new jurisdictions qualified Tuesday for the November 6 ballot. That was before petition circulating intensified this past spring; vendors were told in March they would be paid $3 per signature - higher than numerous other proposals found on card tables set up outside stores and other public areas.
The bottom portion of the state, which would include San Diego and the eastern part of the state with Fresno, would become Southern California, according to a map by the Times. The ballot measure does not address how to divide up the state's extensive assets.
Tim Draper is known for having insane ideas - and for funding them. Californians voted for it to appear on the ballot in November's general election.
If voters approve the measure, it would still have to be ratified by Congress. And then Congress would have to approve it as well.
Cal3provides has mapped out a series of statistics regarding how the Golden State would be split up.
Virginia was the last state to split in 1863 to create Virginia and West Virginia.
He does not fully support Draper's initiative but he does see it as an opportunity for support for the State of Jefferson. Supporters of the initiative argue the state isn't fairly represented with senators in Washington.
"I am 100 percent certain we'll oppose it", said Eric Bauman, chair of the California Democratic Party.
Counties would continue to fall under the purview of the existing California government until each new state established its own separate government and adopted a constitution.
"How would we pay for basic services, what are our basic services, how would we fund just basic state government", he said. "California government can do a better job addressing the real issues facing the state, but this measure is a massive distraction that will cause political chaos and greater inequality". "Californians deserve a better future". Still, he noted, some good could come of the effort even if it doesn't pass.
The initiative divides all 58 counties in California into three separate states.
The lack of success for the previous efforts to split California hasn't kept Bay area venture capitalist Tim Draper from trying. Three smaller states would change that equation, which worries some Democrats. The measure aims to create states with relatively equal populations and economic strengths.
California, covering the Central Coast from Monterey to Los Angeles.
Northern California would include Sacramento and San Francisco.
This is the third time Draper has tried to get voters to weigh in on breaking up the most populous U.S. state.
