Donald Trump optimistic ahead of historic summit with Kim Jong Un

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-Un, is meeting with US President Donald Trump in Singapore today. This included the destruction of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Korea, added Mr Moon.

The summit would set the framework for "the hard work that will follow", Mr Pompeo said, insisting that North Korea had to move toward complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation.

North Korea has so far presented Kim's sudden diplomatic overtures to his neighbours and to the United States as a logical next step following what Kim has claimed is the completion of his plan to develop a credible nuclear deterrent to what Pyongyang has long claimed is a policy of hostility and "nuclear blackmail" by Washington.

The two leaders shook hands firmly when they met and the world witnessed the meeting through a host of media gathered there. "We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship. You're my friend", Trump told Lee, according to the news agency.

Pompeo did say the United States is "prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique that America has been willing to provide previously".

A successful summit would be a "great gift" to the whole world, Mr Moon was quoted as saying in a Blue House statement.

However, economic sanctions are not likely to be lifted immediately after the summit, U.S. analysts noted, as the process is contingent upon how faithful North Korea is with denuclearization pledge.

Lee complimented the bold and admirable decision by Kim and Trump to come together for the Summit.

Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday to participate in the summit scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday at the exclusive Capella Hotel in Sentosa Island, reports The Straits Times.

Actually, says another group, there will indeed be disarmament, a peace treaty ending the Korean War and North Korea's emergence as a contributing member of the worldwide community - but just not right now.

Imagine if President George W. Bush had met Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein for face-to-face negotiations in January 2003 in Egypt instead of the USA -led invasion going ahead two months later and you get a sense of how remarkable this summit is. Abe visited Trump at the White House last week.

Tuesday's summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president. Abe is, not surprisingly, anxious that the United States will end up easing up on Trump's policy of "maximum pressure" on Pyongyang without getting any major concessions in return. The team is to deliver the latest developments of Kim-Trump summit to the home government, while bringing and releasing the South Korean government's own response as well. "This is not someone who takes a lot of time to do strategy, he's not someone who's going to extensively read the research in negotiations".

"If diplomacy doesn't move in the right direction, sanctions will increase".
