E3 2018 Report Card: The Winners and Losers

Microsoft's previews 50 new games ahead of E3 video games convention Microsoft's previews 50 new games ahead of E3 video games convention

Microsoft displayed a record 52 games at the E3 pre-show event including 18 console launch exclusives and 15 world premieres.

The release of the game was announced at global gaming event E3 in Los Angeles.

Of course, there's no guarantee that Microsoft will keep pace with Sony - or even the company's own rapid release pace. Back in 2016, at E3, Microsoft revealed that they were working on Xbox TV, which ultimately got scrapped, and they could be going back to the drawing board on something similar.

While Phil Spencer now can't say more about the next Xbox console, but he confirmed that Microsoft remains committed to the gaming business, and we should expect the next console to have backward compatibility.

That we still haven't seen some of the games announced back in 2016 released should serve as a reminder of how long it takes to make significant, big budget games.

While Microsoft has not yet confirmed "Scarlett" as an upcoming Xbox console or consoles, Xbox's head Phil Spencer announced during E3 2018 that the Xbox One X's engineering team is "deep into architecting the next Xbox consoles" at the moment. The 2018 Xbox showcase was a blistering 90 minutes of exciting and diverse games, offering everything from the usual Microsoft fare (new Halo, Gears and Forza) to Japanese titles (Devil May Cry 5, Sekrio) to genuine surprises (Battletoads, Cyberpunk 2077). A new Halo game is on the way!

Microsoft rival Sony is reported to be working on a successor to PlayStation 4.

With the increasing popularity of Sony's PS Now subscription service, there is a big chance that the Xbox Two will be using cloud-based gaming technology. What we saw wasn't necessarily a bunch of new titles (Although we did see one or two third party exclusives) but in fact some titles nearing closer to completion and getting a release date. This is especially notable though considering that most haven't played a Battletoads game since the 1990s.

At E3 2018 it was made clear the console is starting to blur the lines between offline and online, but gamers are a lot more receptive this time around.

"We are dedicated to perfecting your experience everywhere you want to play - your Xbox, your PC and your phone", he added.
