Retired General Michael Hayden on Monday slammed Donald Trump for his "unstable, erratic and thin-skinned" attack on Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, arguing "President Trump made President Trump look weak" with his crusade against America's closest ally.

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back", he said.

Mr Trudeau, who had said at the news conference that Canada would retaliate over new U.S. tariffs, did not respond to questions about Mr Trump when the prime minister arrived at a Quebec City hotel on Sunday for meetings with other world leaders.

In a mocking tone, Kudlow rattled off the reasons Trudeau offered for his barbed critique of Trump's policies. Trump said that he withdrew the US from the G-7's joint statement because of that slight.

Trump administration members continued a war of words with a traditional US ally Sunday, accusing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of stabbing the president's team in the back.

"We are, by-and-large, integrated because we have common values and common legal systems and common strategic objectives", he said.

"Canadians.stood shoulder to shoulder with American soldiers in far-off lands in conflicts from the First World War onward", he said.

Canada last week announced retaliatory tariffs on C$16.6 billion ($12.8 billion) worth of USA exports and said it will challenge US steel and aluminum tariffs under the North American Free Trade Agreement and the World Trade Organization.

Later on June 9, after he left the G7 summit, Trump unleashed a barrage of tweets, likely while he was aboard Air Force One on his way to Singapore for his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un - "Just left the @G7 Summit in lovely Canada".

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said Saturday night that Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Trump.

Mr Kudlow accused the Canadian PM of betraying Mr Trump with "polarising" statements on trade policy that risked making the USA leader look weak ahead of a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he has asked US representatives not to endorse the joint statement put out by the Group of Seven leaders after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's "false statements" at a news conference.

Earlier, the White House escalated the initial tirade and levelled more withering and unprecedented criticism against Mr Trudeau, branding him a back-stabber unworthy of Mr Trump's time.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a television interview on Sunday that the summit is a "sobering" and "depressing" experience with an outcome that "wasn't a great thing".

The prime minister also said Canada would "move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1, applying equivalent tariffs to the ones that Americans have unjustly applied to us". We get on the plane, and then this guy, Trudeau, starts blasting us. "We are sticking to them and whoever reneges on them is showing incoherence and inconsistency", President Emmanuel Macron's office said on Sunday in a statement to AFP news agency.

He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

"Well", Kudlow explained, "he holds a press conference, and he said the U.S.is insulting".

As well as criticising the tariffs, Mrs May has also opposed Mr Trump's call for Russian Federation to be readmitted to the group of leading industrialised nations. "But to walk away from our allies in this way, I think, is a mistake".

"We strive to reduce tariff barriers, non-tariff barriers and subsidies", it said.

Trudeau fires back on May 31 over the tariffs being applied on the premise Canada poses a national security threat to the U.S.
