A US Department of Defence (DoD) representative said one US solider was killed.

The US troops quickly found themselves on the receiving end of mortar and small arms fires, and in the ensuing fighting, one American soldier was killed, and four others wounded.

"This area is called Sanguni, we came here to carry out a special operation created to liberate this area that is still under the control of al-Shabab fighters", Lt. Col. Abdi Ibrahim with the Somali armed forces said Friday.

Friday's attack also follows the October 4 ambush in Niger that killed four US soldiers, their interpreter, and four Nigerien troops.

The troops had been on a mission to clear al-Shabab from contested areas as well as villages the armed group's fighters controlled "and establish a permanent combat outpost" to expand the reach of the Somali state, the U.S. military's Africa Command said.

The operation is aimed to clear the Somalia-based extremist group al-Shabab from contested areas.

Africom's statement did not specify how many enemies or which organization carried out the attack, but reports say the al Qaeda-affiliated al Shabaab is suspected.

President Donald J. Trump issued his condolences to the American soldier who lost his life on Friday.

The US troops were on a training mission with local Somali and Kenyan forces when the attack occurred.

The names of victims will not be released until the families have been notified. One of the wounded USA service members received sufficient medical care in the field, and the other three were medically evacuated for additional treatment.

The American forces were operating alongside Somali troops.

Mostly composed of special operators such as Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs and Marine Raiders, the U.S. forces in Somalia have conducted frequent raids and drone strikes on Shabaab training camps throughout Somalia. The US had pulled out of the country after 1993, when two helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu and bodies of Americans were dragged through the streets.

It follows the death of four United States soldiers in Niger last October in an ambush attack that raised questions about the continuing role of American forces in Africa.
