Trump considers dozens of new pardons

SUSAN WALSH AP "When will this very expensive Witch Hunt Hoax ever end? So bad for our Country,'' said Donald Trump

Asked about the letter, Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani said on Sunday that the President is not going to pardon himself but "probably does" have the power to do it.

President Donald Trump's lawyer Rudy Giuliani says Trump's legal team and press secretary simply "got it wrong" when they said the president had nothing to do with drafting a statement for his son about a meeting with a Russian lawyer during the 2016 presidential election.

"As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong?" he wrote on Twitter Monday.

It's the latest salvo from Trump in his bid to discredit the ongoing probe by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The reports came soon after President Donald Trump commuted the sentence of Alice Johnson.

He made it clear Trump's legal team would combat any effort to force the president to testify in front of a grand jury.

Trump's defense team in January argued that the president could not have obstructed justice, since he has total authority over the Justice Department, and could even terminate the special counsel investigation if he wanted to.

House Speaker Paul Ryan said Wednesday that President Trump should not pardon himself.

Giuliani, Trump's lawyer in the Russian investigation, noted that he was sharing a personal opinion and was not part of the U.S. foreign policy team.

He said the president's legal team has not discussed that option, which many observers believe could plunge the nation into a constitutional crisis.

"He has no intention of pardoning himself", Giuliani told ABC's "This Week". "Pardoning other people is one thing, pardoning yourself is tough".

Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner is said to have coordinated with West from within the White House.

The comments come after The New York Times published a 20-page letter to special counsel Robert Mueller by Trump attorney Jay Sekulow and then-Trump lawyer John Dowd. He said he has informally made the request, but gotten no response.

He added that he is still leaning against recommending that Trump do an interview with Mueller, but "we want to keep an open mind" if the special counsel can keep it brief and to a narrow set of topics.

"We said, 'Well, we're not going to have a summit under those circumstances, '" Mr Giuliani said. "I am even more convinced that the Federal Bureau of Investigation did exactly what my fellow citizens would want them to do when they got the information they got and that it has nothing to do with Donald Trump".

Giuliani used strong words like "hypocrisy" and "scoundrels" during his exclusive 700 Club interview with CBN Founder Pat Robertson.

In a tweet Monday, Trump weighed in on the question of whether he could pardon himself should the special counsel find he interfered in the investigation into Russian Federation meddling in the 2016 election.

The office recently informed 180 petitioners that they would not be granted clemency at this time, a White House official confirmed to CNN, but the administration has said it will continue to review pardons and make decisions on a rolling basis. President Bill Clinton was charged with obstruction in 1998 by the House of Representatives as part of his impeachment trial.
