SES-12 Launched by SpaceX for Asia-Pacific, Middle East Services

SpaceX goes for its 11th launch of the year early on Monday SpaceX prepares for Monday launch of SES-12 satellite

The company's Falcon 9 rocket, with a used first stage, launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force at 12:29 a.m. Monday.

Over the next five years in the SES-12 service region, SES expects the direct-to-home TV market to grow by some 80 million users, "and obviously, this satellite will be a great way to deliver that content to the homes across all of Asia-Pacific", Hemingway said.

SES-12 will operate under the authority of the Netherlands and will replace and augment the services now being provided on SES's NSS-6 satellite.

SES-12 is the 13th satellite built by Airbus for SES and the third all-electric satellite built by Airbus in orbit. The spacecraft also has a Digital Transparent Processor (DTP) that increases payload flexibility to provide much more customisable bandwidth solutions to SES's customers.

Standing some 27 feet tall and weighing almost 12,000 pounds, Halliwell joked that the spacecraft built in France by Airbus Defense and Space barely fit inside the Falcon 9 rocket's nose cone, or payload fairing. The satellite will join SES-8 at 95 degrees East.

"It's big", said Martin Halliwell, chief technology officer at SES, of the satellite.

It was the 11 mission of the year for SpaceX. According to Space.com, Musk and his company are trying to develop rockets and spacecraft that can be quickly reused in an attempt to lower the cost of space exploration. It is expected to enter service in late January or early February.

SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket is ready to liftoff early Monday morning from Cape Canaveral carrying the SES 12 satellite. SES-12 is designed for an operational life of some 15 years. Following separation from the launcher, the satellite has completed its initialisation phase and has started electric orbit raising (EOR) operations as planned. The decline primarily reflects a continuing global slump in manufacturing orders and launch contracts for large commercial satellites.

This is actually confirmation of something we already more-or-less knew.
