Paris: Serena Williams announced her shock withdrawal from the French Open through injury on Monday just minutes before her scheduled fourth-round clash against Maria Sharapova.

Williams told reporters at Roland-Garros that she was having issues with her pectoral muscles, saying it's hard to serve.

"Right now I can't actually serve", said Williams, according to the New York Times.

Williams came into Roland Garros having played four WTA Tour matches, all in March, since giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. on September 1.

Despite playing just four matches in 2018 before Roland Garros, Williams played doubles in Paris with sister Venus.

'The first time I felt it was against (Julia) Goerges (third round), it was really painful.

"I tried lots of taping and support to see how it felt in match circumstances", Williams said.

For her part, Williams's answer befit one of the greatest athletes of all time: "I honestly don't have any thoughts about that".

It's the second time Williams has withdrawn from singles play in 67 career Grand Slams after retiring during a 1998 Wimbledon third-round match with a calf injury. It didn't get a lot better.

Sharapova is often billed as her rival-though Williams' dominance hasn't left much room for a real rivalry.

Williams' coach said the plan is to have an MRI scan to assess the damage of the injury. "I'm going to stay here and see as many specialists as I can", she said when asked when she'd be able to train again and if Wimbledon was in her plans. I sacrificed so much to be at this event.

"I think Serena can get close to winning another Grand Slam". "It's extremely disappointing but I made a promise to myself that if I'm not at least 50 percent, I shouldn't play".

Sharapova's walkover advances the dual French Open victor to a quarter-final on Tuesday against 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza, who advanced when unseeded Ukraine Lesia Tsurenko retired, also injured, while trailing the Spaniard 2-0 on Monday. Muguruza has now played just 16 games in her last two matches combined, so she should be possibly the freshet player remaining in the tournament.

The withdrawal of Williams from the competition means Sharapova now advances to the quarterfinals for a ninth time.

"It's hard", she said, per Reem Abulleil.
