In 2015, the survey showed that 71% of American teenagers between 13 years old and 17 years old used Facebook.

Three years later, USA teens say they use YouTube (85%), Instagram (72%), and Snapchat (69%) the most.

It said that YouTube is now the most dominant social network amongst teens, with 85 percent of them preferring the video-sharing platform.

In fact, according to the recent Pew report on teen social media behavior, "no other platform was used by a clear majority of teens at the time".

"Until recently, Facebook had dominated the social media landscape among America's youth - but it is no longer the most popular online platform among teens", the report said.

Among the report's findings: teens from lower-income families are more likely than those from higher-income households to use Facebook. The shares of teenagers who use Twitter and Tumblr are largely comparable to the shares who did so in the 2014-2015 survey.

A report past year (2017) by investment firm Piper Jaffray showed Snapchat is the preferred social network for USA teens, with 47 per cent using the platform.

But some surveys and analysts suggest it is losing appeal to younger users amid a rise in services like Snapchat and Facebook-owned Instagram. Around 70 percent of teens from those households use Facebook.

When asked which of the online platforms teens used the most, only 10% said Facebook.

The survey discovered that 50 percent of female users said they were always online compared with 39 percent of male users.

Those data, combined with decreasing user numbers overall, can be problematic to a social platform hoping to woo more marketers to spend money to appeal to younger consumers-especially those with more disposable income.

Ease of connectivity and interaction with others are the chief positives when teens describe in their own words what they gain from social media.

Snapchat, however, slightly outpaced YouTube in the "most often" used category at 35-percent versus 32-percent.

The Pew Research Centre has released new research which questions whether we can continue to call Facebook the king of social media. In 2018, the percentage was 45 percent, up 21 points from three years ago.
