One person was reportedly captured in the operation.

"I want to say sorry for what you felt. Olechka, forgive me, but there was no other choice", he said.

"Special apologies to my wife for the hell she's been through these two days", he added.

His reappearance elicited gasps, then cheers and applause from journalists at the briefing.

His murder triggered a huge outpouring of grief among Russia's liberal opposition, with journalists and politicians warning that Kremlin critics had become fair game under President Vladimir Putin. "Best friend of Ukraine, who told the truth about Russian aggression to the world".

He accused Ukraine and its "Western handlers" of seeking to use it to stir up anti-Russian sentiments.

Ethical questions were also raised in the wider journalism community.

It said independent groups should lead an investigation. Some media organizations said the staged plot undermined the credibility of journalists.

A Russian journalist harshly critical of the Kremlin was shot and killed in the Ukrainian capital Tuesday, and the national police said he apparently was targeted because of his work.

He later took to Twitter, promising to die "when I am 96 after having danced on Putin's grave".

The security service said, according to the Post, that Babchenko's death was meant to be the first of some 30 planned killings of Russian citizens in Ukraine allegedly ordered by Russian special services.

Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement: "We demand that the Ukrainian authorities make every effort to promptly investigate" the killing. A video of the man being detained was shown to reporters.

Agency Chief Vasily Gritsak said the killing was ordered by "Russian special services" and there was "indisputable evidence of the terrorist activity of Russian special forces in Ukraine".

Russian anti-Kremlin journalist Arkady Babchenko, whose fake death Ukraine admitted on Wednesday to staging, has many admirers but probably even more detractors.

The Associated Press (AP) is reporting that Ukrainian security officials "confirmed" Babchenko's death to help track down the would-be killers.

On Facebook, Ukrainian prime minister Petro Poroshenko congratulated the security services for the "brilliant operation", but said the threat continues.

He wrote about his experience as a young soldier in the Chechen campaigns in a book published in English under the title "One Soldier's War". "It is always deeply unsafe for states to play with the facts". In the meantime, the Russian Investigative Committee has launched its own investigation into Babchenko's death.

Ilya Ponomarev, a former Russian MP who also moved to Ukraine, said Mr Babchenko continued being threatened after he settled in Kiev past year, where he worked as a host for the Crimean Tatar TV station.

"We strongly condemn the murder of the journalist Arkady Babchenko, Kyiv".

The Russian internet news site Kommersant, citing a source close to the Ukrainian prosecution, reported that the assassination was "almost certainly a provocation by outside parties".
