Tesla stock jumps after winning Consumer Reports blessing

Indian CFO Will Decide When Tesla Will Enter Country Says Elon Musk Tesla stock jumps after winning Consumer Reports blessing

The update has since been completed and shipped, and now Consumer Reports is both confirming that Tesla managed to improve the car's braking distance by 20 feet and it says it's giving the Model 3 its highly sought-after recommendation - even while it hopes Tesla will also do more to improve the car's center-mounted touch controls, which its testers worry are hard to use while driving.

The organization noted the Model 3 required 152 feet (46.3 meters) to stop from 60 miles per hour (96 km/h) and this was 7 feet (2.1 meters) longer than the Ford F-150. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk vowed that Tesla would fix the issue in a matter of days. He said a firmware update was in the works and "Tesla won't stop until [the] Model 3 has better braking than any remotely comparable auto".

Before the update, the auto had taken an average of 152 feet to come to a full stop from 60 miles an hour, about seven feet longer than a Ford F-150 pickup, according to tests performed at Consumer Reports' Connecticut track. The new software addressed variations in braking styles and environmental conditions, a company spokeswoman told Consumer Reports.

The Model 3, which starts at $35,000, is seen as crucial to Tesla's profitability at a time when it is battling reports of crashes involving its Autopilot software, questions over funding and production shortfalls.

While the Model 3 is now recommended, the magazine still had issues with the vehicle's ride, wind noise and uncomfortable rear seat.

But Consumer Reports said it appears that Tesla has already begun to make changes to the Model 3's controls with new over-the-air updates. Rather, he said that the issue could very well be resolved via an over-the-air software update. Improved windshield for aero noise & suspension for ride comfort are major ops.

In June, Musk said that Tesla was in discussions with the government, requesting temporary waiver of import penalties and other restrictions until a local facility is built.

Also mentioned in CR's updated Model 3 ratings were the difficulties associated with the car's 15-inch center-mounted touchscreen, which handles nearly all of the vehicle's controls.

CR plans to rent another Model 3 from Tesla at a later date to see these changes in action.

"Would love to be in India", Musk said in the Twitter posting. But after a software update from Tesla, that distance was cut by 19 feet to 133.

The magazine also found flaws with the Model 3's dashboard.
